Public clamor pays off: Proposed Casamata Hill entrance fees spare local residents

Bangued, Abra – Residents of Abra may continue to enjoy free access to Casamata Hill National Park under the Department of Environment and Natural Resources' (DENR) proposed entrance fee policy, following strong public sentiment expressed during a public hearing held on July 7 at the Abra State Institute of Sciences and Technology (ASIST)-Bangued Campus.

The proposed exemption came after residents voiced mixed reactions during the public consultation and in online discussions regarding the planned collection of entrance fees at one of the province's most popular tourist destinations.

While many supported the proposal, saying the additional revenue could help improve the park's facilities, cleanliness, security, and environmental protection, others argued that Casamata Hill should remain free for the public because of its long-standing role as a community park and the limited amenities currently available.

Based on the proposed guidelines presented by the DENR, as shared by Damdamag Abra, all Abra residents will be exempt from paying entrance fees. The proposal also grants free admission to persons with disabilities (PWDs), senior citizens, and children seven years old and below.

Meanwhile, visitors from outside Abra would be charged P30 for adults and P15 for students, while foreign tourists would pay P100 per person.

Despite the proposed exemptions, DENR officials clarified that the entrance fee policy has not yet taken effect. The proposal remains under public consultation, and comments and recommendations from stakeholders and residents will still be reviewed before any final policy is adopted.

Casamata Hill National Park is one of Abra's best-known landmarks, attracting both residents and tourists with its panoramic views overlooking Bangued, walking trails, religious sites, and recreational areas.
