Remains of LGBT rebel who committed suicide in 2013 recovered in Cagayan

Cagayan, Philippines – Remains of a member of the CPP-NPA who committed suicide due to alleged gender discrimination in the movement were recovered by the authorities on Tuesday, February 23.


According to Northern Luzon Command, AFP press release, a former rebel revealed to the army that Ka Barney who is a member of the LGBTQ community experienced gender discrimination from his comrades and that he wanted to lie low from the movement, however, he was not granted the freedom.


With this, he took his own life in 2013 by drinking chloroquine, a medicine use for malaria.


The retrieval of his remains which was not given a decent burial in Sitio Lagum, Baranggay Lipatan, Sto Nino, Cagayan was through the information given by the former rebel, said Northern Luzon Command, AFP.

“They abandoned Ka Barney with less regard for his contributions to their group; this is how the NPA treat their members after they’ve been rendered useless,” stated Lieutenant General Arnulfo Marcelo Burgos Jr., Northern Luzon Command Commander.


The commander added that may the incident serve as a wakeup call to the rebels in the movement to surrender and that the AFP in the north will remain to be relentless and steadfast in their sworn duty to protect the people.
