Road safety education a crucial part to address rampant road accidents in Kalinga

Tabuk City, Kalinga ̶ While the roads in Kalinga provide satisfying driving experience, road accidents have been one of the main problems being faced by the province. The data of Kalinga Police Provincial Office showed 24 people died in vehicular traffic incidents in 2020 alone.

With this, a newly inducted rider community in the province, Full Spectrum Riders Association of the Philippines (FSRAP) sees importance of road safety education in addressing road accidents in Kalinga.

FSRAP President Moises Baysa, Jr., emphasized that based on police data, most causes of accidents relate to human errors, citing speed and intoxication as well as failure to use turn signals. He said failure to use signal lights is frequently observed among motorcycles utilizing the outer lane when overtaking slow moving vehicles.

“Ang unang tutukan natin is ma-educate natin ang mga drivers tungkol sa driver courtesy, discipline, and responsibility sa kalsada. And once na na-educate natin sila, it will cause a domino effect,” he said.

What is Full Spectrum Riders Association of the Philippines?

FSRAP is a nationwide rider organization and that the first 83 members in Kalinga took their oath this March 27 at Kalinga Astrodome. The members, Baysa said, came from different riding groups in Kalinga.

He added that the organization is open for interested members, but they have to adhere to certain rules and requirements such as driving license, updated ORCR, driver’s license restriction and others. Aspiring members shall undergo informal seminar on the do's and don’ts required by the organization.

“We always make sure na disiplinado ang mga sumasali kasi discipline starts within us, within the organization. How can we practice what we preach kung kami mismo ay violators,” he said.

What is their mandate?

The riding group’s main mandate is to help and promote road safety. They are partners of agencies such as the Highway Patrol Group. Apart from being road safety advocates, the group is also into community services and charities.

Baysa stressed they do not expect anything in return, “we think what we can do to the community not what the community can do to us."

“We hope na we set an example para sa next na mga generation,” he added.

Meanwhile, among the FSRAP’s programs include Basic Life Support training to the members and discussion or seminar on laws about the road.
