Santa Marcela, Apayao – The Municipality of Santa Marcela was among the local government units (LGUs) in the region recognized by the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council–Cordillera Administrative Region (RDRRMC-CAR) on December 16 for its exemplary efforts in Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) and community service.

The award was received by Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer (LDRRMO) Rodel Ballinan during the GAWIS Kordilyera 2025, held in Baguio City.

The GAWIS Award—short for Governance in Action, Working towards Inclusivity and a Safer Kordilyera—is a prestigious recognition conferred on individuals, organizations, or institutions that have made significant contributions to community development, particularly in the area of disaster risk reduction.

The accolade honors the municipality’s outstanding initiatives and collaborative efforts that strengthen disaster resilience, climate change adaptation, and humanitarian response across the town.

Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (MDRRM) Chairperson and Mayor Evelyn B. Martinez regarded the recognition as a result of the council’s and local officials’ commitment to resilience and disaster preparedness, with a strong focus on the well-being of the townspeople.

In her statement, Mayor Martinez also lauded the collaborative efforts of barangay partners, community stakeholders, and emergency responders.

“Pagyamanan tayo daytoy a pammadayaw iti ili tayo. Dagitoy ti mangipaneknek nga ar-aramiden ti tunggal maysa ti trabaho na. Sapay kuma ta itultuloy tayo ti agmaymaysa maiturong iti pagsayaatan ti lugar tayo,” Mayor Martinez expressed.
