Santa Marcela Local Health Board pushes for institutionalization of local nutrition programs to combat malnutrition

Santa Marcela, Apayao - The Local Health Board (LHB) of Santa Marcela, led by Mayor Evelyn B. Martinez, held its regular meeting on Thursday, April 24, to ensure the public of improved delivery of health services and efficient implementation of related policies.

 

Among the highlights of the public health agenda discussed comprised the Proposed Comprehensive Municipal Ordinance on Nutrition Program and Services, which aims to institutionalize and enhance local nutrition programs, particularly to address malnutrition. Municipal Health Officer Dr. Myolaine C. Hilario said the proposal includes strategic interventions to combat malnutrition and promote food security, incorporating the need for healthy dietary practices across all barangays.

 

Report from last year revealed that malnutrition in Apayao is still high with a 9.96% stunting rate, a wasting prevalence rate or low weight for height 1.69%, and for underweight 4.14%. With this Santa Marcela LGU, through the LHB wants to contribute to the decrease in the record, hence the drafted ordinance for nutrition programs.


LHB chair Mayor Martinez, in a statement, emphasized the importance of healthy lifestyles among families, urging everybody, including the local health workforce, LGU personnel, and barangay workers, to actively cooperate in the quest for health security.


“Let us be a part in our pursuit of a healthier and safer Santa Marcela. Let us support every undertaking that the Committee on Health and other health authorities implement for the welfare of our constituents, especially our children,’’ Martinez said.


Further, the Revision of the Local Drinking Water Quality Monitoring Committee’s composition and responsibilities was presented to ensure safer water sources and prevent waterborne diseases that pose risks to residents. Adoption of the Provincial-Wide Health System (PWHS) Ordinance, presentation of the RHU Disaster Risk Reduction and Management for Health (DRRM-H) Plan, and other similar matters were also considered. 


Meantime, Supervising Administrative Officer Oscar T. Ramos, Jr., Committee on Health chair Edna M. Calban, Municipal Health Officer Dr. Myolaine C. Hilario,  SMDH staff, National Line Agencies representatives, Punong Barangays, LGU Department heads, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), RHU workers, LHB members, PSDS Marivic M. Calelao, Ms. Claudine Caluducan, Ms. Analyn C. Ceria, and representatives from the Provincial Health Office participated in said meeting and affirmed commitment to public health welfare.
