Senior citizen arrested, charged with 39 counts of rape for molesting grandchild

Cagayan, Philippines—A senior citizen charged for 39 counts of rape, after allegedly sexually assaulting his granddaughter since 2018, finally fell to the hands of the authorities on July 19 in Piat, Cagayan.

The Cagayan Police Provincial Office reported that suspect ‘Voltaire’, 64, married, and a resident of Sto. Niño, Cagayan, was accused of raping his minor grandchild since March 2018.

According to the police, the victim disclosed that the suspect repeatedly assaulted her and threatened her that he is going to kill her and her other siblings should she tell anyone what was being done to her. The fear held her back from reporting the incident.

Investigators say she tried to tell her father about her situation, but unfortunately, the latter did not believe her.

The abuse only reached the police in July 2019 after the victim revealed the repeated assault to her grandmother, prompting the latter to accompany her to report to the authorities.

Through a warrant of arrest served by the Piat Police Station and the 17th Infantry Battalion against the suspect this July 19, ‘Voltaire’ is now under the custody of the police for documentation and proper disposition.
