Shooting of Igorot Police Director in Sulu under investigation

Tabuk City, Kalinga – Chief Philippine National Police, General Guillermo Eleazar recently ordered the creation of a Special Investigation Task Group to probe the shooting of Police Colonel Michael Bawayan Jr., an Igorot Police Provincial Director (PD) in Sulu, and the subordinate suspected to have shot the PD.

Bawayan, whose roots are from Sagada but resides in Baguio City, was allegedly shot dead by his subordinate, Police Staff Sergeant Imran Jilah in the afternoon of August 6 in Barangay Asturias, Jolo.

According to reports, Bawayan was conducting an inspection at the checkpoint in Barangay Asturias around 4:20 PM when he reprimanded Jilah for his long hair, which he found untidy. However, when the provincial director was about to trim the suspect’s hair, he allegedly pulled out his gun and shot the provincial director.

The security aide of Bawayan as a reaction allegedly shot the suspect. The two were immediately rushed to the hospital but were both declared dead on arrival.

It was also reported that it was not the first time that Bawayan had called out the attention of the suspect.

Meanwhile, General Eleazar stated that he is not inclined to give a deadline to the Special Investigation Task Group to finish their investigation. This is to avoid undue pressure that might give haphazard results, the general said.

“We do not want to make hasty conclusions at this point. We’d rather await the result of the investigation,” Eleazar added.

The Special Investigation Task Group shall be composed of the investigative teams from the CIDG – BAR, Regional Intelligence Division, Crime Laboratory, Regional Investigation and Detective Management Division, and Jolo Police Station.
