After exactly one month of staying at the hospital, Alvin Dela Cruz, the hospitalized son of Mrs. Florence was finally brought home in Barangay San Juan, Tabuk City this January 25.

Alvin, as narrated by Mrs. Florence to Guru Press in an interview on January 21, had his leg fractured on Christmas Eve after a tricycle driven by an intoxicated man crashed on his motorcycle in Isabela.

“Amin nga pangiiwasak ma’am jay motor, isu ti papanan na ma’am. Isunga ilusot ko kuma ma’am, talaga naabutan jay sakak ma’am ken jay sidecar,” he recalled.

He was rushed to a hospital but they had to travel him back to Tabuk City for medical attention since, for some reasons, he was refused in Isabela. They were left with no choice but to travel back to Tabuk City.

With an open wound and bleeding leg, Alvin had to endure hours of pain caused by discomfort because the only option then was to travel by a tricycle. They reached Tabuk City on December 25th. However, if they were not accommodated in the hospital in Isabela, the one they were expecting to rush Alvin to was on lockdown.

“Permi sakit na ah ma’am ta natukkol ma’am santu agayayos dara,” he describes the pain.

Since Kalinga Provincial Hospital was not available, they tried Almora General Hospital but it was likewise locked down. He was already losing too much blood when he was finally brought to another hospital which saved him. Their arrival at the said hospital in Tabuk made Florence relived from the trauma of experiencing burying her own child. She said she could not bear losing another child.

After Florence and Alvin tested negative with the Covid-19 virus, Alvin finally got the medical attention he badly needed. Surgeries were performed and they placed a stainless steel plates and screws on his fractured leg.

Alvin was able to recover, however, they had to pay a huge amount. After exhausting all means to have it paid, their relative messaged Guru Press on January 21st . It was then that their story got published on the news website.

Their hospital bill that time was P194K and Alvin would be discharged if they could pay their bill.

“Uray nak lang agsangsangit ah ma’am ta ti agduduma nga panpanunuten ni mother ko ma’am,” said Alvin, describing the feeling of having to see his mom do everything in order to get him discharged as they couldn’t afford to get his bill higher. With the bill and watching his mother go through the stress and having no time to eat, at some point he wished to have just died, thinking that maybe it would have made things easier.

After their story was published, at least 6 individuals contacted the family and an amount of P7,500 was raised. Moreover, another 6 individuals have personally given their share to one of the staff, an amount of P3,700 was given to the family on January 24.

On January 25, Alvin was finally released due to the help of DSWD, PCSO, the Office of the Congressman, and the collected amount from the people. With the concerted effort of various people, 50 percent of their bill was paid off - from P220,94.09 to P111,646.09.

After he was released, the mother called and shared the good news with her relieved voice. However, since there is no money left, they could not buy Alvin’s medicine. Fortunately, 3 individuals donated and P2,000 for his medicine on the same date he was discharged.

“Permi ah iti yaman ko ma’am kanyada da mother ko ta haan dak binaybay an ma’am. Inaramid na amin tapnu maagasan nak lang. Permi ti yamyaman ko kanyada, kadagiti tinmulong. Agpasalamat nak kanyada. Pagyamyamanak da isuda ma’am amin da nga tinmulong kanyak ken dagiti kayat na pay nga tumulong,” Alvin expressed.

Fund raising is still ongoing with an attempt to help the family settle their remaining balance of P111,646.09. To those who wish to donate, you can directly contact the family on these numbers 09666757879 or 0912317663.
