Balbalan, Kalinga – Under his term, Mayor Almar Malannag has been making sure that the student-workers in Balbalan get the most out of their temporary employment, ordering for their deployment in offices and not on the streets.

On May 15, the Balbalan Municipal Local Government Unit started the implementation of this year’s Special Program for Employment of Students (SPES), a government initiative which temporarily employs students during summer vacation, which benefits 93 grade 10 – 12 learners in the town.

The funding for the 52 beneficiaries was shouldered by the Municipal LGU, while the wages of the 41 are funded through a 40-60% sharing of the DOLE and Balbalan MLGU, respectively.

Mayor Malannag wanted all SPES beneficiaries in Balbalan to get a first-hand experience in the workplace which will prepare them for their future jobs after they finish their studies in college. Thus, his order of having them work in offices and not in fields.

“Haan da mapan ditoy field. Agyan da nga agyan iti opisina. Ta idiay opisina gamin ket makita da nu kasanu nga agopisina ti maysa nga opisina. Nu maka-graduate da tu iti college, adda maikabil idiay resume da nu ag-apply da, at least adda tu iti naadal da bassit ditoy ili tayo nga Balbalan,” he said.

The mayor himself conducts regular and strict monitoring of these 93 SPES beneficiaries to make sure they are working inside the office and not doing labor works on the streets or in the fields.
