State of calamity declared in typhoon-ravaged Abra


Abra, Philippines – The province of Abra, where Super Typhoon Egay brought landslides, flashfloods, loss of lives, livelihood, and properties, has been placed under a state of calamity.


This is after data gathered from MDRRMOs met the criteria for such declaration such as: having damage to critical and lifeline infrastructure or facilities that may result in emergency response, disruption of services, or inaccessibility of LGU basic services; widespread destruction of agricultural products, among others.


In its latest update, the PDRRMO confirmed at least three individuals died due to drowning. Two of these are identified as Juliet Daquel, 51, and her daughter Jujelyn Simpuruso, 13, from Barangay South Balioag, Pilar.

The two were on their way home from looking after their goats when the water level in the river they were crossing suddenly rose, sweeping them away.


The identity of the other casualty is yet to be disclosed.


As of Thursday noon, around P11.6 million cost of damages were reported.


The typhoon affected a total of 22,552 families with 75,849 individuals, while 571 houses were partially damaged and 4 houses were totally wrecked.


Provincial Operations Center, meanwhile, said the province is suffering from three major landslides, 27 minor landslides/ rockslides/ mudslides, and 18 swollen rivers/ spillways/ creeks.


Other damages are not yet accounted for due to transportation problems.


With the declaration of a state of calamity, the province will be granted access to calamity funds "for rescue, recovery, relief, and rehabilitation and for the continuous provision of basic services to the affected populations."


Price controls on basic necessities and prime commodities will likewise be implemented to prevent profiteering.
