Tabuk City, Kalinga – Following the midterm elections on May 12, youth volunteers in the city gathered to clean the surroundings and take down campaign materials around Tabuk City on May 13 with plans to recycle them into something useful or profitable.

The activity was initiated by the Sangguniang Kabataan Bulanao Norte who were joined by SK councils in Laya West, Balong, Nambaran, PYA Bulanao Norte, and other youth volunteers.

SK Bulanao Norte Chairperson Marion Tombaga, while talking to GURU Press Cordillera, explained that they pushed for the activity to uphold the City Ordinance No. 003 Series of 2021 which regulate the use of cellophane and sando bags as packaging materials and the utilization of styrofoam as food and beverage containers.

“The purpose is for nature preservation and protection and to instigate the ordinance calling to ban single-use plastic especially in the market place,” he said.

The collected political tarpaulins will be turned into eco-bags, Tombaga shared.

“It will be transformed into eco-bags to be used by the people of Tabuk ken nu kaya i-try mi pagbalinen nga market umbrella ken pang cover iti collapsible tent,” the SK Chaiperson said.

It is expected that with the move of the young people, the waste material from the recently concluded elections shall be reduced and will be turned into something useful.
