Cagayan, Philippines – A ‘barangay tanod’ lost his life while patrolling on Babuyan Island amid the onslaught of Super Typhoon Nando on September 22.

Nando severely ravaged Northern Luzon when it made landfall on Panuitan Island in Calayan on Monday afternoon, placing the Babuyan Islands under signal number five and leaving a casualty – a barangay tanod who was last seen patrolling in Babuyan Claro.

The victim, according to the Cagayan Provincial Information Office, was walking around when he was hit by a branch that broke off from a tree which seriously injured him. A neighbor who saw the victim immediately sought help to bring the man to the hospital; however, he died even before he reached the medical facility.

Remains of the man were temporarily placed at the evacuation center as the authorities contact his family in mainland Cagayan.

Meantime, Bernie Nunez, the school head of the island, told the Cagayan PIO that Super Typhoon Nando was so far the strongest weather disturbance to have hit their place – leaving most houses damaged and structures like church, school, and business establishments destroyed.
