Teen sisters from Apayao are ASEAN Chess Championship silver medalists

Flora, Apaya0 – Two sisters from Apayao brought pride to the country after both of them won second place in the recently concluded 21st ASEAN Age Group Chess Championships in Bangkok, Thailand.


The two were among fifty delegates who represented the country in the prestigious event where young chess players from different ASEAN countries vie for regional supremacy.

Mhage Sebastian, called to be a Chess-Woman National Master (WNM) prodigy at age 17, won three silver medals in Standard, Rapid, and Blitz games during said event.


She will be representing the country in the 7th Eastern Asian Youth Chess Championship in Hainan, China, under-18-girls category, from August 3 to 11 this year.


Meantime, her younger sibling Ghierzen Lhou, bagged 1 silver medal in the Blitz Games under 12 years old Girl’s category.


Lhou is also one of the Cordillera’s representatives in the ongoing 63rd Palarong Pambansa in Marikina City, after securing 2 gold medals during the 2023 Cordillera Administrative Regional Athletic Association (CARAA) Meet held in Baguio City.


Overall, the Philippines collected 16 gold, 37 silver, and 8 bronze medals, making them the second-best team, with Vietnam coming on top with a 92-36-50 record.
