This candle-type ceramic water filter can save lives!

Tabuk City, Kalinga – Governor Ferdinand Tubban received 70 units of DOST Ceramic Water Filters fabricated in Bauko Mt. Province for free as part of the aid from Department of Science and Technology CAR and Kalinga for the disaster risk reduction efforts of the province.


Governor Tubban said, this is a big help to the families which need it most, adding that he is considering of procuring additional units when necessitated.


Provincial S&T Director, DOST-Kalinga Jasmin Donaal mentioned that the province experience several calamities and disasters given the terrain, the geography and the fact that the country as a whole is situated in a typhoon target location. In times of disasters, availability of potable water becomes crucial especially in areas which become inaccessible.

When water is scarce or damaged utilities are yet to be rehabilitated, the equipment can save people from sickness and other disease that might come from dirty water.


In her presentation to the Governor, Donaal said the ceramic water filter can take out microbial and particulate contaminants in drinking water for use in households.


Donaal said the equipment can purify tap water, deep well water and raw water or water from ponds and spring. What is more about this ceramic water filter is that it is easily transportable, low cost at around P1,200 with more than a year filter lifespan, and does not require electricity.


Deaths related to unsafe drinking water


World water forum finds that about 1.4 billion in the world lack drink clean drinking water and that 7 million people die every year from diseases linked to water. In the Philippines, the Institute for Development studies reported that nearly 6,000 annual premature deaths caused by water-borne diseases are recorded.


From the study of the National Water Resources Board in 2017, it was stated that 8.5 million Filipinos have no access to safe drinking water.

Problem of access to clean and safe drinking water remains a huge problem in rural and urban areas, most specially in far-flung places that are not reached by government services. It is hoped that this ceramic water filter can serve families in many isolated areas in the province as well as those places which frequency suffer from disasters and those with no adequate potable water.


What the DOST said about the equipment?


The ceramic water filter uses micro-filtration process which is a proven technique in removing contaminants. In the testing and evaluation of the product, they found that it passed their tests on filtering coliform organisms like e-coli bacteria and other micro-organisms which normally cause diarrhea and other water borne diseases.
