Tinglayan, Kalinga – In support to the vegetable production in the Municipality of Tinglayan, the Office of the Municipal Agricultural Services (OMAS) has proposed a plan to promote the conversion of biodegradable wastes through composting producing organic fertilizer.

As a strategy, compost pits will be established in the barangays where biodegradable wastes can be deposited, then processed, and used as organic fertilizers by the farmers.

According to the Municipal Information Office, the proposed plan was raised during the 1st Quarter Solid Waste Management Board meeting on Wednesday, March 2, 2022.

The Municipal Information Office added that the board likewise considered using Indigenous Micro-organisms (IMO) to biodegradable wastes for faster decomposition.

Winning barangays to compete again

In the same meeting, barangays in Tinglayan, which won last year’s province-wide competitions, were suggested to join again.

The winner of the healthiest barangay, Lower Bangad, will represent the municipality for the Provincial Search for Healthy Barangay (New Category) 2022.

Barangay Poblacion, on the other hand, will compete for the Sustainability Category.

The incentive programs, the office said, are helpful strategies in encouraging the communities to participate in Solid Waste Management campaign.

The municipal local government of Tinglayan, headed by Mayor Sacrament Gumilab, assured full support for the barangays, which are set to compete in provincial-wide.
