Tinglayan, Kalinga – Farmers coming from various farmers’ groups in Tinglayan are being trained this month of August on various dates for the implementation of swine repopulation program of the Department of Agriculture - Special Area for Agricultural Development (SAAD).
In a press release, SAAD-Kalinga said the training started on August 11 with an orientation for the beneficiaries, with other sessions to be scheduled in later dates.
With the training, farmers are expected to gain proper knowledge and skills in managing swine repopulation projects awarded to them, thereby ensuring success of the program and shall boost swine production in the municipality.
The various famers’ organization are the first to benefit from Farmer Livestock School Training in Tinglayan, according to Charity Sibayan of DA-SAAD Kalinga.
Some important matters tackled in the training
Dr. Angelyn Tanding and Jackilyn Odlus from the Provincial Veterinary Services, during the training, discussed to the farmers farm biosecurity measures, which are practical methods taught to limit spread of infectious diseases like the African swine fever (ASF).
Piglet castration or the surgical removal of testicles from boar piglets was also demonstrated to the participants. The removal of the testicles lessens the potential for odor and taint associated with male hormones in boars after puberty.
The next sessions, according to Sibayan, are yet to be scheduled. To be discussed during following sessions will be the guide for successful swine-raising, swine feeds and feeding, swine health management and Animal Welfare Act.
What’s next after the training?
After completion of the training, Sibayan said the participants will receive from the agency gestation and starter feeds. The quantity was not disclosed, but she said the feeds to be given will be enough to feed the sows during their gestation period until they give birth.
“Umanay nga kanen na diay baboy nga masikug inggana makaanak ken kanen diay buryas na, complete package,” Sibayan stated.
