Tinglayan, Kalinga conducts prevention strategies in dengue-affected barangays

Tinglayan, Kalinga – Alarmed with the huge increase of Dengue cases in the province, the Local Government Unit of Tinglayan, through the Municipal Health Office, are carrying out prevention strategies in five affected barangays in the municipality.

Kalinga’s dengue cases from January to August this year, according to Department of Health Cordillera, increased by 1069 percent and logged 4 death cases. For Tinglayan, their health office said they have recorded 9 cases.

Ambato, Poblacion and Bangad Centro recorded 1 case each, Basao with 4, and Barangay Dananao with 2 cases.

As part of the prevention techniques, MHO partnered with the Municipal Disaster Risk and Reduction Management Office and barangay local government units through their barangay health workers in spraying for mosquitoes in the different barangays.

Some of the areas recently visited for the spraying are the vicinity of the Saint Theresita’s School and at sitio Muyumuy in Barangay Poblacion from 6 AM-9 AM when mosquitos are most active.

These will continue to be done in other barangays having logged cases of Dengue.

MHO nurse Holly Balla-ao stressed that spraying helps in killing mosquitoes and effectively decreases the occurrence of dengue cases. This method, he added, is even more effective than fogging.

“Fogging will only drive away the mosquitoes. Spraying and misting, on the other hand, can eradicate them. After 30 minutes of spraying, the mosquitoes are sure to perish,” she said.

Apart from said method, Municipal information officer Larae Lactao said that BHWs are doing an information education campaign regarding dengue in their respective catchment area to help with the control of Dengue cases.

One important technique that they stressed during the campaign is the search and destroy technique, in which they ask their fellow yTinglayans to destroy or clean plastic containers, and pots, among others, which can possibly be used as breeding sites by deadly dengue mosquitos.

Teachers in schools also help by reminding their students to eat healthy food and drink at least 8 cups of water a day to strengthen their immune system.
