Tabuk City, Kalinga – A total of 20 fire incidents have been recorded in Kalinga for the month of May alone. The Bureau of Fire Protection provincial office says that the hot temperature and kaingin may have aggravated most said incidents.

Based on the data of BFP – Kalinga, of these 20 fire incidents 10 are grassfires, 2 forest, and 3 agricultural. Also four incidents involved structures while one was a vehicular fire.

Eleven of these fire incidents happened in Tabuk City, 4 in Rizal, 3 in Pinukpuk, and one each in Pasil and Tinglayan. These resulted to a total damage of P925,000.

Most fire incident in the region

Kalinga Provincial Fire Director, SUPT Allan Eballar, said that Kalinga has the most fire incidents in the entire region for the month of May.

PAGASA has reported that the month of May was the hottest period in the Philippines, “at bukod sa mainit, siyempre taniman uli kaya ‘yun nga po, ‘yung sinasabi ko kanina na kaingin system na kung minsan, nagsusunog po sila pero napapabayaan nila, hindi po nila nababantayan,” he said.

Eballar said that they are always on red alert because of the hot temperature in Kalinga which makes fire easier to start and spread.

“Every day po naka-red alert kami because our province is very hot and we are always on red alert because of the fire incidents that occurred, lalo na ngayon na tayo ang pinakamaraming incidents in the entire region,” he said.

The provincial fire director then appealed for the public to take extra precaution to prevent fire. He added that since grassfire is the most common incidents in the province, farm land owners after cleaning their lands should ensure the fire is put off before leaving.

“Hindi lang po naman bombero ang may responsibilidad sa pag-prevent para hindi po mangyari ang mga sunog na ito. It is everybody’s business at sana po mag-tulungan po tayo,” he said.
