Top 9 NLE passer from SLU relates story why she wants to be a nurse

Being helpless while watching people struggle with health issues is something Richelle Faith Dampil Cayabyab doesn’t wanted to experience, thus she decided to take a nursing course.

Cayabyab graduated Cum Laude at Saint Louis University in July this year and secured the 9th top spot in the November 2023 Philippine Nurses Licensure Examination (PNLE).

Cayabyab said that at first there were so many professions she wanted to pursue but not nursing. Nevertheless, her interest in human biology, with the thought of being able to take care of her family and other people when they need medical assistance, made her decide to one day become a nurse.

“What really inspired me to pursue Nursing is that gusto ko kapag may nangyari sa family, or kanino man, related sa kalusugan nila, dapat alam ko yung gagawin; that I can be of help if something happens to someone, with regards to health,” Cayabyab told GURU Press Cordillera.

Distracted in the review

Among the challenges faced by Cayabyab while preparing for the board exam was distraction. Back then she recalled overthinking and being unmotivated caused her mind not to absorb information she was reviewing.

“Also wala sa puso ko ang pag-rereview, so ang lakas po ng self-doubt ko. Paano kaya ito? But then, the comfort and peace of the Lord embraced me. He made me stable enough, to bravely and confidently take the board exam,” she relayed.

While she wanted to top, she did not expect to be able to do it because of what she went through during her review. She, however, didn’t let uncertainties overcome her faith.

“This is my prayer throughout my review days. Sabi ko “Lord, gusto ko pong mag-top, help me to be one; still Thy will be done.” Kaya po lagi ko pong sinasabi, it is not me who did this, it is the Lord who did everything,” she said.

Cayabyab’s advice to test takers – “Study Smart”

Apart from prayers, Cayabyab’s advice to those who will be taking the PNLE next is to also study smart or to use their time well. They should not relax too much, and they should not exhaust themselves too much as well.

Another tip she gave is to find the best learning style suited for them and to also review the basic concepts in nursing.

“You will never go wrong kapag alam mo yung concepts mo, kahit ano bali-baligtarin ang tanong, you can answer it. Practice answering board questions. In that way, mapalalawak yung knowledge mo kung paano aatakihin ang questions. If you are struggling with memorization, just like me, repetition is the key. Lastly, be healthy, holistically,” the PNLE Top 9 emphasized.
