Tinglayan, Kalinga – “Tourism is good, but when it goes out of control, it can destroy our home,” Mayor Sacrament Gumilab reminded the people during the inauguration of the recently established Buscalan Tourism Information Center.

The Tourism Information center ensures a systematized tourist registration process and transaction in the most visited village in the province as well as means to inform of the dos and don'ts of tourism in the municipality.

During the event, the mayor underscored that the preparations are being undertaken while tourism is not yet open; expressing hope that by time it opens, everything will be in place for the industry’s operation to move smoothly.

“We should keep our environment clean and green because tourists do not only visit Buscalan because of Apo Whang-od, but also to unwind and bask in the cool winds and freshness of the countryside,” he said.

Gumilab encouraged the community to practice segregating their wastes at home, build comfort rooms with septic tanks and educate their children with regards to proper waste management.

Furthermore, the mayor warned the people not to wait for the government to take action, as some tourist spots in the country were shut down by authorities due to poor solid waste management and abuse of the tourism sector.

Gumilab cited Boracay Island which was ordered for closure to give time to conduct clean-up and beach clearing activities for the island to recover from the damages incurred from hands of undisciplined individuals.

"Let us not wait for the government to step in before we discipline ourselves,” he added.

As recalled, Tourism in Tinglayan was suspended on March 1, 2021 by virtue of Executive Order No. 08 series of 2021 due to the threat of the Covid-19 virus.

With tourism being a source of livelihood and local employment in Tinglayan, the economic condition of locals has been greatly affected with the restrictions brought by the Covid-19 pandemic.
