Baguio City, Philippines – Valley Bread Inc., one of the Cordillera's most recognized and trusted bakeries, has announced a price increase across its product line, drawing mixed reactions from consumers who say they understand the realities of rising production costs but are urging the company not to sacrifice the quality and quantity of its products.

For many households across the Cordillera and other parts of the country, Valley Bread has long been a staple on the dining table. Founded in 1991 as a one-man bakery, the company has grown into one of the region's most popular bread manufacturers, earning a loyal following through decades of affordable, freshly baked products.

After keeping its prices unchanged for four years despite increasing operating costs, the company announced that a new pricing scheme will take effect on July 27, 2026.

Advisory explains price increase

In an advisory posted on its official Facebook page on July 13, Valley Bread said the adjustment was necessary because of the continuing rise in the cost of ingredients, supplies, fuel, and other operating expenses.

"It has been four years since we last raised our prices. Since then, much has changed in our economy... For as long as we could, we absorbed these increases to avoid passing the additional costs on to you, our valued patrons. However, we have now reached a point where a price adjustment has become necessary. While we are raising our prices, please rest assured that our commitment to quality remains unchanged," the company said.

Under the new pricing scheme, the 500-gram Pullman Loaf will increase from ₱48 to ₱55, while the 600-gram Pullman Loaf will rise from ₱58 to ₱67.

The 500-gram Premium White Bread will increase from ₱54 to ₱60, while the 600-gram variant will go from ₱65 to ₱72.

Meanwhile, the James Wright Classic White Bread (600g) will jump from ₱70 to ₱89, while the Classic Whole Wheat Bread (600g) will increase from ₱78 to ₱99. Several pastries and other bread products will also be sold at higher prices.

Consumers divided over the increase

The announcement quickly generated hundreds of comments online, reflecting the impact that even a few pesos' increase can have on consumers who regularly buy bread for their families.

Many customers said they understood that inflation and rising production costs have made a price adjustment unavoidable. However, they urged the company to ensure that the higher prices come with the same—or even better—quality.

Several customers said they had already noticed changes in some products over the years, claiming that certain bread varieties had become smaller or contained fewer ingredients.

Some specifically pointed to the company's popular raisin loaf, saying it no longer has as many raisins as it used to, while others observed that products such as coco cream bread appeared smaller than before.

Others responded with humor, saying the latest price increase had convinced them to start baking their own bread at home.

"Paborito ko raisin bread nila noon... halos araw-araw bumibili ako sa tindahan. Maraming raisin. As in marami talaga. Tapos for the last two years, di na ako bumibili. Amoy at bakas na lang ng raisin ang nakikita ko sa bawat halukay sa slices... Naabutan ko pa siya na ₱45. Ngayon nasa ₱100 na, di ko pa mahanap ang raisin," one customer wrote.

"Better to bake your own bread," another commenter said.

Despite the criticism, many loyal customers expressed appreciation for the company's transparency, saying they preferred an honest explanation for the price increase rather than a "silent" reduction in product quality or serving size.

"To maintain the loyalty of your customers like me, no problem in increasing the price as long as it has improved the quality of your bread that customers are longing for. The price must be right and equal," another customer commented.

With the new prices set to take effect on July 27, discussions continue online as consumers weigh the higher cost against the bakery's long-standing reputation for quality. While many say they remain loyal to the brand, they hope Valley Bread will stay true to its promise that the increase will not come at the expense of the taste, quality, and quantity that made it a household favorite.
