Wild mushrooms poison 17 in Tabuk City

Updated: Aug 26, 2023

Tabuk City, Kalinga – The health department in the Cordillera Region cautioned the public against consuming mushrooms in the wild.

This, said the department, is to prevent more cases of wild mushroom poisoning.

On August 11, 17 people in Tabuk fell ill after they reportedly ate wild mushrooms, disclosed Senior Health Officer Jethro Simeon of the DOH - Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit during a press conference held in Baguio City recently.

Of those who suffered from the incident, 14 are from Balawag village aged 2 to 69 years old. The other three persons are from Barangay Cudal.

“In both incidents, someone picked wild mushrooms in the forest and several people ate them not knowing that what was gathered were not edible ones,” said the senior health officer.

Upon consumption, the victims experienced vomiting, dizziness, and abdominal pain. They were hospitalized and were discharged after several days.

The most common poisonous type of mushroom, according to Simeon, is the one with a ring-like structure on its stem and scales on its umbrella.

“It is difficult to identify them because there are numerous types so the best thing to do if you are not sure is not pick or buy and prefer the cultured ones which are surely edible and will not endanger you or your family,” he stated

The health department likewise recommended ‘that the public prefer to buy the commercially produced in legitimate selling areas, especially if they do not know how to decipher.’

“In case of emergency, seek medical help immediately,” he stressed.
