Baguio City, Philippines – By day, Miguel Jarel Dumalis Bas-ilen balances the demanding life of a working student and aspiring engineer at Newtown Plaza Hotel in Baguio City. But beyond the long shifts and academic responsibilities, he now carries a bigger mission—representing the Cordillera on the national stage.

The proud son of Ifugao and Mountain Province is set to compete in the upcoming Mister Tourism World Philippines (MTWP) in September 2026 in Laguna, where candidates from across the country will battle not only for a crown but also for the opportunity to promote tourism, culture, and environmental awareness.

The prestigious male pageant focuses on tourism, socio-cultural development, and environmental advocacy while selecting the country’s representative to the international Mister Tourism World competition.

For Miguel, however, the journey is more than pageantry. It is a story of perseverance, sacrifice, and carrying the identity of the Cordillera with pride.

Before earning the title of reigning Mr. Tourism World Cordillera 2026, Miguel first made his mark in local pageants. From being crowned the first-ever Mr. Ajuwan 2022, he steadily climbed the pageant stage, later winning Mr. Benguet Tourism 2023, Mr. La Trinidad Strawberry Festival 2023, Mr. University of the Cordilleras 2025, and eventually becoming the first-ever Ginoong Cordillera 2025.

Behind the titles is a young man juggling studies, work, and personal ambitions—an experience he said shaped his resilience and strengthened his connection to Cordilleran values.

During his sashing ceremony, Miguel emphasized that representing the Cordillera goes far beyond wearing a sash or holding a title.

“As I transitioned toward grander presence, I’m not only representing my city, I’m not only representing my municipality, I’m not only representing my province, rather I stand as the proud representative of the Cordillera... Beyond the title, I’m honored and committed to protecting our land, our heritage, and empowering communities to live in harmony with nature,” Bas-ilen said.

His journey has also inspired fellow Cordillerans. Reigning MTWP titleholder Granville Raymundo encouraged the youth of the region to remain proud of their roots and continue using their talents and passions to uplift communities, promote responsible tourism, and preserve Cordilleran heritage for future generations.
