Youth summit for Betwagan, Butbut sub-tribes to be held August 18-19

Tabuk City, Kalinga – To instill peace and harmony among the youth of the warring subtribes of Butbut in Tinglayan and Betwagan in Sadanga, Kalinga police is holding a youth summit for them on August 18-19.

The two sub-tribes have been at logger-heads for some time due to unsettled boundary disputes which sparked conflicts early this year and the previous years.

With more engaging activities involving the youth, it is hoped that the situation will de-escalate and better means to come into terms shall emerge later.

Kalinga police informed that the special youth summit shall be held in Awichon Cultural Village in Lubuagan.

The youth summit aims at fostering unity and forging tighter ties among young generations.

Team-building exercises and lectures on preventing violence and terrorism, as well as the fight against illegal narcotics, are among the activities in the two-day event.

Further, the summit seeks to empower the youth to become advocates of peace and promote character-based leadership skills.

Mt. province and Kalinga officials working for amicable solutions of the boundary dispute

Line agencies and officials from the provinces of Kalinga and Mountain Province have persistently promoted peaceful settlement methods resulting into some positive developments.

Mayor Sacrament Gumilab informed earlier this year that the Regional Peace and Order Council (RPOC)-Cordillera made the addressing of the marijuana issue and the long-running boundary conflict between the Butbut and Betwagan sub-tribes as their priorities.

Activities prior to the Youth Summit

To gather funds for the conduct of said summit, Kalinga police held a three-day orientation workshop involving artwork with police personnel and their families as participants.

The pieces of artwork produced from the activity were displayed for exhibit and auction.

The money earned from the exhibit and auction was collected for the youth summit.

The Art Immersion and Exhibit for a Cause as well as the youth summit are some of the activities planned by the Philippine National Police (PNP) Officers’ Ladies Club (OLC) Kalinga Chapter led by their adviser, Joyce Tagtag.
