Quezon City, Philippines –A week before Christmas and 13 days before New Year, there has been zero reported cases of firecracker-related injuries in the country so far, according to the Department of Interior and Local Government Unit.

DILG reported this December 18 that Undersecretary and Spokesperson Jonathan Malaya mentioned of the goal of having zero number of firecracker injuries.

According to Malaya, zero fire-cracker related casualty is attainable as people welcome the New Year since there were only 4 fire-cracker related cases reported from the New Year’s Eve of last year, far lower from the incidents recorded from the previous New Year’s Eve.

The Undersecretary added that based on the data of the Philippine National Police, 307 fire-cracker related incidents were recorded in January this year; 449 in 2018; 652 in 2017; and 929 cases in 2016.

"There has been a steady decline for the past three years and we can sustain that trend if we remain persistent with our efforts to implement laws and regulations on the use of firecrackers such as Republic Act 7183 and Executive Order No. 28," he said.

He added that the decrease of fire-cracker related incidents in the country manifest that the people can still celebrate Christmas and New Year without compromising tradition.

For the regulation and control of the use of firecrackers and other pyrotechnic devices, the DILG issued Memorandum Circular No. 2017 – 105.

Moreover, the public is encouraged to cooperate with the Bureau of Fire Protection’s “Oplan Paalala: Iwas Paputok.”
