2 brothers in Abra shot after soldiers mistook them for NPA members

Updated: Jan 12, 2023

Lacub, Abra – Two brothers in Sitio Sap-al, Buneg, Lacub who were mistaken as members of the New People’s Army were reportedly wounded after having been shot by government troops on Sunday, November 27.

It was first reported that a shoot-out between the government troops and the leftist group occurred in said area, but after conducting an investigation, it was found that the two were not NPA members.

Lacub police said the government troops informed them regarding the said incident in the afternoon of the same date.

Barangay Buneg Captain Manulo Sabadao, meantime, identified the victims as Apolonio Sagban and Ricardo Sagban. Both are residents of Barangay Buneg.

According to him, the reported encounter between the NPA and the government troops is untrue since the victims are just ordinary civilians.

He added the Sagban siblings were just checking on their warty pig trap in the area when the shots were fired.

Due to the shooting, Apolonio sustained wounds in his thigh while Ricardo was shot in his shoulder.

They were later ferried to Abra Provincial Hospital for proper medication.
