Tanudan, Kalinga―With the provision of free farm equipment, members of the two farmers’ associations in this town will no longer have to work under the scorching sun to harvest corn manually.

Members of the Nalyawan Cooperative from Barangay Taloctoc and Marucay Cooperative from Barangay Ga-ang recently received 2 units of threshers each, amounting to more than P.8 million to help them provide better means of harvesting crops while reducing time spent and labour expenses on the process.

The four units of threshers were delivered and turned over on July 8 through the Philippine Center for Postharvest Development and Mechanization (PhilMech) of the Department of Agriculture (DA).

He underscored the importance of farm equipment in lessening the burden of the local farmers working on their farms for long hours in a day. And with the farm equipment helping them out, said farmers will now have more time to engage in other farm or livelihood activities increasing their productivity.

“Dakkel ti maitulong na kadagiti farmers tayo tapno malakaan ken ma-lessen ti aldaw or oras da nga agani kadagiti pagay da ta diyay manual gamin ti us-usaren da diay ibasbas da iti pagay tapno maisina diay butil ken garami,” he related.

Having more than 70 hectares of farmlands, the acquisition of farm machinery and equipment of the farmer-beneficiaries will assist them to remain competitive in the market in spite of the prevailing concerns on the agricultural condition of the country.

The national government adopted farm mechanization as one strategy of the national government to increase harvest to help farmers around the country achieve the goal of the Philippines to be food sufficient.
