4,354 pigs in 9 towns of Cagayan purged

Updated: Dec 17, 2020

Cagayan, Philippines―A total of 4,354 pigs have been culled or slaughtered and buried due to the virus carried by African Swine Fever (ASF) from 38 barangay of nine (9) towns in Cagayan, according to the report of Acting Provincial Veterinarian Dr. Noli V. Buen this December 15.

Cagayan Provincial Information Office said that Buen informed that the most affected by the said virus was the Municipality of Amulung with 9 barangays. Second is Solana with 8 barangays, then Alcala 5. Additionally, Baggao and Tuao recorded 4 barangays each as ASF infected; Enrile 3; Iguig and Gonzaga 2 barangays each; and 1 barangay in Piat.

The virus affected 793 farmers or hog raisers. Most of them have already received their financial assistance worth PhP3,000 each from the Provincial Government. This is aside from the assistance of PhP5,000 per sacrificed pig. That assistance was from the Department of Agriculture (DA). The maximum number paid is 20 pigs per hog raiser.

The Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) said that they are still getting blood samples of pigs in neighboring areas affected by ASF.

Of the total 632 blood samples they took as of December 15, 403 were negative and 229 were positive for ASF.

Meanwhile, checkpoints are strictly enforced especially in the Cagayan borders consisting of PNP, Livestock Technicians from the Municipal Agriculturists, Livestock Technicians of the Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO), TFLC and Marines Battalion Landing Team 10 to ensure non-expansion of ASF in the province.

Earlier, Cagayan Governor Manuel N. Mamba released Executive Order No. 33 banning the release of live hogs, fresh and frozen pork products in Cagayan to control the ASF crisis.
