Balbalan, Kalinga – A road clearing operation in Talalang, Balbalan on Friday afternoon, January 6 turned tragic after a 41-year-old man was accidentally run over by a backhoe.
Renato Gabriel Sayan of Poblacion, Balbalan was clearing the debris and rocks off the road with his co-workers at Sitio Fangngao in Barangay Talalang when the accident happened, Kalinga Police Information Officer Ruff Manganip said.
PCapt. Manganip added that Sayan attempted to remove a rock from the back wheel of the backhoe when his hand got stuck. The other workers noticed the victim’s struggle and tried to get the attention of the backhoe operator, Orlando Soverano from Ableg, Pasil.
Soverano, however, misunderstood the message and thought there was a falling rock. This prompted him to drive the backhoe backward, causing the victim to be run over by the vehicle.
Sayan was rushed to the Western Kalinga District Hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
The backhoe operator, on the other hand, surrendered himself to Balbalasang Barangay Captain Edwin Pagano. The latter turned over Soverano to the Balbalan Municipal Police Station.
