Tabuk City, Kalinga – Approximately 5-hectares of farmland in Barangay Callagdao was destroyed when a wild grassfire razed the area on Sunday morning, April 25.

Acting City Fire Marshall, SINSP Ronald Rivera said they sent three fire trucks to stop the fire after receiving a report of said incident.

“Nag-responde met a dagus iti maysa a fire truck mi idiay Bulanao ... nag-fire fight da met ketdi idiay ket medyo dakkel ngay gamin isu a pati dagiay duwa a fire truck mi naki-augmenten a nagkarga,” he said.

The area, he described, was a vast grassland planted with a few Gmelina trees. Based on initial investigation, the fire, Rivera said started with an open flame that spread quickly due to the wind.

“As per initial investigation, kasla nga iti cause na ket open flame. Kasla nga adda iti nagdalus idiay ket nagpuor,” he said.

“Naangin nga agsapa, although nasapa piman alas otso ngem naangin diay nga agsapa idi Sunday, isunga nag-spread ngay. Innala na diay bangir isunga dimmakkel,” he added.

Meanwhile, nobody was hurt during the incident, which he said is the 7th fire incident that occurred in Tabuk City since January 2021. From the seven, five were grass fires, one vehicular, and one residential.

Importance of firebreak

According to Rivera, it is important to have a firebreak or at least a 1-2 meter(s) space on boundaries of farmlands. This, he said, will prevent the spread of a bigger fire just in case there is a grass fire.

“Dagita nalawa iti dagdaga na a kasdiay nga adda mulmula na talaga a kailangan da nga agaramid met lang iti firebreak idiay boundary da,” he said.

Also, based on their record, grass fire occurs mostly during summer and mostly because of open flame. This is why Rivera is reminding the public to be responsible and to look after the fire they created in cleaning their land.

“As per kadagitoy records mi ngay ditoy, basta March aginggana summer isu iti panag-adu iti grass fire. Although adu met iti cause na, ngem mostly iti records mi ket dagita open flame a pinag puor da. Dapat nu kasdiay maging responsible da met a bantayan da dagiay nagdalusan da,” he said.

Meantime, in case of fire incidents, the acting city fire marshal tells the public to immediately call the Bureau of Fire and Protection hotlines.
