6 Kalinga teens won medals in two Luzon-wide MMA tournaments

Tabuk City, Kalinga – Six young mixed martial artists from Kalinga Province won medals in two tournaments participated by the best fighters all-over Luzon from July 13 to 17, 2022.


These events include the Muay Thai Regional Championships - Luzon Leg 2022 in Olongapo City from July 13 to 17 and the Tapang sa Tapang - 6 Mixed Martial Arts in Urdaneta, Pangasinan on July 16.


The young athletes who represented Kalinga in said competitions are Lyca Garcia, 14 years old; Rose Pita, 15; Alexander Tagure, 13; Salko Velic, 13; Jeck Martizano, 16; Arvin Sabado, 18; and Alester Tagure, 18.

Luzon Leg Muay Thai


The athletes from the province brought home two golds, one silver, and one bronze during the 4-day Muay Thai Regional Championships - Luzon Leg 2022.


Head Coach of Tribu Banwar, Erwin Tagure told Guru Press Cordillera that his athletes, Alexander and Velic won gold in 38 kg and 40 kg divisions, respectively.


Likewise, Garcia snatched a silver medal (38kg) while Pita earned a bronze (40kg). Both Garcia and Pita belong to Team Malayan coached by Daniel Gumilao.


Mixed Martial Arts


For the Tapang sa Tapang - 6 Mixed Martial Arts, Alester won via unanimous decision in the 53 kg division.


Sabado, on the other hand, represented Kalinga in the 60 kg division, winning the competition on Technical Knockout via referee stoppage.


Prepare for the national


After winning the two tournaments, Tagure said they will be preparing for another two incoming national competitions.

One is the national Muay Thai where they will be facing winners from Visayas and Mindanao.


The other competition they are planning to join is the Luzon Leg Kickboxing next month.


Winners in the event will be competing at the national level. The champion in the national will be representing the Philippines in the 2023 SEA Games in Cambodia.
