7 dead, 2 injured, 6 missing in CAR due to Ulysses

Tabuk City, Kalinga – Typhoon Ulysses as of 1 pm of November 13 killed 7 individuals in the Cordillera Administrative Region, Office of the Civil Defense-CAR Director Albert Mogol reported in a Press Conference.


Mogol said that of the 7 casualties, 5 died in Ifugao and 2 in Benguet.

The Regional Director narrated that on the evening of November 12, personnel of the Department of Public Work and Highways were clearing the road at Barangay Viewpoint in Banaue as part of the early recovery when a heavy rain poured.


Due to the incident, they all went to the contractor’s bank house to wait for the rain to stop. While they were there, there were also stranded individuals who can’t pass the road and were forced into joining the people at the same bank house.


Unfortunately, the heavy rain didn’t stop and continued on until a landslide occurred burying the place with them inside.


“It is just very unfortunate na habang nagte-take shelter sila ay nagkaroon ng massive landslide at ‘yon pong bank house na pinagshelter-an nila ay kasama po sa nagslide at very unfortunate [that] out of 12, isa lang po ang injured na narecover natin who is now on a stable condition,” he said.


“Yung lima po were already retrieved and confirmed dead and anim pa po yung ating hinahanap so far. On going po yung search, rescue, and retrieval operation,” he added.


Meanwhile, as to the 2 reported deaths in Benguet, one is a senior citizen who was found dead after bambo trees fell directly at his house due to the strong winds. The other is a middle aged man who was on his way to his car when unfortunately, a land slide occured and took his life.


Mogol said that the number of casualties shall be subjected to confirmation by the Department of Interior and Local Government.


Other major incidents monitored in Ifugao


Mogol further reported that there were 4 stranded individuals at Sitio Pugo, Barangay San Juan in Alfonso Lista who were rescued and now safe.


Moreover, another batch of stranded people were also rescued at Sitio Bulao in Lamut.

According to the report of OCD - CAR Director, there is a total of 86 families or 338 people who were displaced due to the typhoon. 86 people are now inside 10 Evacuation Centers(ECs) while 150 families are outside ECs.


As to damaged to houses, there were 2 totally damaged while 66 partially. Also, there were 8 flooding incidents, 64 soil collapse, and 1 major landslide recorded.


Moreover, as to schools, there were 6 with infrastracture damage, 5 affected by flooding, 5 affected by soil erosions, and 1 with damaged access road.


Further, Mongol said that P19.7 million worth of damages to agriculture were reported and that 1,027 farmers in the region were affected by the typhoon.
