Abra, Philippines – A 25-year-old Abreñan homemade delicacy vendor and engineering graduate serenaded noontime show viewers and online netizens with his classic voice on Sept. 30, 2023.

Mikko Labuguen of Bangued, Abra represented Luzon in the Philippine amateur singing competition, Tawag ng Tanghalan which currently airs on It’s Showtime on Saturday.

The 25-year-old who comes from a family of singers sang his heartfelt rendition of Elton John and George Michael’s ‘Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me’ which earned the appreciation of singers Ogie Alcasid and Klarisse De Guzman.

Alcasid noted Labuguen’s beautiful voice and his classic interpretation of the song.

“Napakagaling, meron ka talagang taglay na napakagandang tinig, classic yung interpretasyon mo ng isang Elton John classic, gustong gusto ko yon. Siguro mas isang beses ka lang na medyo nag-flat, isang beses lang pero otherwise ang gara ng pagkakagawa mo,” he said.

De Guzman, on the other hand, appreciated Labuguen’s powerful voice and his sustained notes which she described to be like Jed Madela’s.

“Napaka-powerful ng boses mo, ang sarap pakinggan, ang strong, and gusto ko rin yung control mo lalo na sa mga runs mo na saktong sakto lang. and yung sustained notes mo, I love it,” she said.

The Abreñan singer got an overall score of 92.2% but was unable to move to the next round of the competition.

Nevertheless, Labuguen, in a Facebook post, conveyed ‘It is not the end, it’s only just the beginning’ as he thanked his family, mentors, and the people of Abra who supported him in his attempt to get Tawag ng Tanghalan’s ‘golden mikropono’.
