Bangued, Abra – The Province of Abra has proven that it is home to elite basketball players after the Abra Solid North Weavers captured the title in the recently concluded Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) National Championship 2025.

The MPBL is one of the country’s premier basketball leagues, where teams representing provinces and cities across the Philippines compete annually. It was established in 2017 by boxing icon Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao and officially launched in 2018 to provide local basketball players nationwide an opportunity to showcase their skills on the national stage.

In the 2025 season, a total of 30 teams battled for the coveted title, with the Abra Solid North Weavers dominating the league from the start. The team carried a remarkable 35-game winning streak into the playoffs and emerged as the top team in the North Division. The Weavers’ only loss came at the hands of the Pasay Voyagers during their matchup on March 19, 2025.

In the national finals, the Weavers faced the Quezon Huskers, champions of the South Division, in a best-of-five series.

During their first matchup on December 11, the Weavers climbed out of a deep hole after trailing 72–80 to edge the Huskers, 81–80, in overtime and take Game 1. Game 2 was held on December 13, with the Weavers taking a commanding 2–0 series lead after a 62–58 victory.

Game 3, a do-or-die match, was played on December 16 at the Quezon Convention Center in Lucena City, Quezon, with Abra just one win away from clinching its first-ever MPBL National Championship, while Quezon needed a victory to extend the series and keep its title hopes alive.

Both teams displayed their best efforts through sharp shooting, smart ball movement, and lockdown defense, but the Weavers ultimately completed a 3–0 series sweep to claim the championship.

Leading Abra’s title run were Dave Ildefonso, who was named the 2025 MPBL Season Most Valuable Player (MVP) and scored 23 points in the final game, and Jayson Brickman, the Finals MVP, who anchored the team with steady leadership and exceptional playmaking. Encho Serrano also played with heart and grit, delivering key contributions in critical moments.

With this victory, Abra joins the list of teams that have lifted the MPBL trophy.

Other league champions include Batangas City Athletics (2018), San Juan Knights (2019), Davao Occidental Tigers (2020), Nueva Ecija Rice Vanguards (2022), and back-to-back champions Pampanga Giant Lanterns (2023 and 2024).
