Aparri, Cagayan hits dangerous heat index of 49°C

Cagayan, Philippines – Extreme heat continued to hit Cagayan on Sunday, May 12, with the province logging its hottest temperature so far this year.

 

According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), 34 areas in the country reached 42 to 51°C heat index on said date. This falls under the ‘danger’ category which poses risks of heat-related conditions like heat cramps and heat exhaustion.

 

Of these places, Aparri experienced the hottest temperature at 49°C.


Gemalyn Lappay of the Northern Luzon PAGASA Regional Services Division, as mentioned by the Cagayan Provincial Information Office, informed that said heat index is the highest recorded in the province for 2024.

 

Other areas in Cagayan that experienced scorching temperatures on Sunday include Tuguegarao City with 45°C and Calayan Island with 38°C.

 

Lappay, meantime, explained that while the effect of El Niño is weakening, hot weather will still be experienced in the coming days.
