Balbalan rescues stranded travelers during 'Goring' onslaught

Balbalan, Kalinga – Disaster responders in Balbalan, Kalinga escorted to safety at least six travelers whose vehicles got stuck in the mud and were stranded along Abra-Kalinga national highway on Sunday evening, August 27, 2023.

Three of those stranded were on board a Toyota van, while the other three were in Toyota sedan, said Balbalan Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office.

One of the passengers of the van said they were heading to Tabuk City from Abra that rainy day. When they are about to reach the Kalinga-Abra view deck, the vehicle got stuck in the muddy road.

She took to social media to ask for help, alerting the local response teams – Balbalan MDRRMO, Balbalan Municipal Police Station and Bureau of Fire Protection that eventually came to their rescue.

With their convergence of the responders, under the supervision of Mayor Almar Malannag, the vehicles were pulled to safety.

The passengers were brought to the municipal hall but those heading to Barangay Bantay in Tabuk decided to drive home, while those from Isabela spent the night at Balblan Hostel.

Mayor Malannag and MDRRMO cautioned motorists that Kalinga-Abra road is not yet safe, especially when raining as landslides may occur.
