Balbalan, Kalinga – As the 2025 Best Tourism Village in the Cordillera, Balbalasang in Balbalan marked two momentous events in the last week of January, as Mayor Almar Malannag honored townsfolk who have helped preserve the area’s environment and rich cultural heritage.

Balbalasang is known for its well-conserved environment, rich biodiversity, clean rivers, and vibrant, well-preserved culture. These qualities earned it first place in the prestigious Search for the Best Tourism Village in the Cordillera in 2025.

Two major events were recently held in Balbalasang: the barangay fiesta on January 25 and the centennial anniversary of St. Paul Church on January 28.

Speaking before villagers, Mayor Malannag – whose maternal roots trace back to Balbalasang –opened his message by recalling what his mother used to tell him: “When you’re from Balbalasang, you’re born with a heart full of love and a spirit as majestic as the mountains that surround us.”

While the Balbalasang community has undergone developments over the past century, its roots, heritage, and traditions passed down from its forefathers have remained intact. This, he noted, is reflected in its recent recognition as the Best Tourism Village in the Cordillera.

According to the local chief executive, the celebration was not only a commemoration of 100 years of faith and service but also an opportunity to recognize the efforts of townsfolk who have preserved what their ancestors started while safeguarding their heritage amid modernization.

“As we look back on the past century, we’re reminded that our faith and service have been the guiding forces that shaped us into the people we are today. And I’m not just talking about the stunning natural beauty that makes Balbalasang a top tourist destination – I’m talking about the people, the men and women who have worked tirelessly to preserve our traditions, protect our environment, and share our culture with the world,” he said.

Malannag concluded by urging residents to remain united in promoting not only tourism but also the unique identity of Balbalasang.

“Let’s showcase the values that make us who we are – our faith, our resilience, and our commitment to service,” he added.
