Updated: Oct 8, 2021

Mountain Province, Philippines—Ten barangays in Mountain Province recently held a simultaneous peace indignation rally in their areas denouncing the Communist Party of the Philippines - New People's Army, as a response to the recent armed encounter in Bontoc.

According to Philippine National Police Cordillera, these barangays are Dalican, Guina-ang, and Mainit in Bontoc; Balintuagan in Bauko; and barangays Aguid, Ankileng, Bangaan, Fedilisan, Madongo, and Pide in Sagada.

During the event, barangay officials, the youth, and the locals gathered with the police and the Philippine Army and walked through town with banners and placards denouncing the CPP-NPA.

Part of the activity includes the burning of the CPP-NPA-NDF flags to symbolize public condemnation of the groups’ ideologies.

These simultaneous peace indignation rallies were said to be also in response to the 30-minute exchange of fire between the military and the rebels in Barangay Mainit, Bontoc last September 28 after the locals reported the presence of the communist terrorist group in their area.

Said armed encounter resulted in the confiscation of firearms, ammunition, and other belongings of the rebels. Apart from this, two of their members were killed.

After the encounter, the remains of the two who were identified as Wilfredo Gaayon and Ernesto Lucaben were brought home and buried in Mabaca, Balbalan, Kalinga and in Barangay Pidpid, Sta Cruz, Ilocos Sur respectively.
