Benguet, Philippines – 11 swine raisers whose pigs were culled due to African Swine Fever received a total amount of P228, 400.00 this Monday, December 28, 2020 from the Provincial Government of Benguet as part of the government’s assistance.

The financial aid was personally turned over by Governor Melchor Diclas, Board Member Juan “Coy” Nazarro Jr., and Provincial Veterinarian Dr. Miriam Tiongan.

According to PIO Benguet, the 11 recipients from the Municipalities of Itogon, La Trinidad, Bokod, and Atok are already the fourth batch of those who were given.

On November 11 by said LGU, a total amount of P826, 700.00 was given to the third batch recipients (20 swine raisers). On September 8, a cash aid amounting to a total of P949, 200.00 was also received by 28 swine raisers in the province.

P10, 000.00 was given for every boar and sow killed, P5, 000.00 for fattener and gilt, and P1, 700 for weaner and piglet.

The first batch of recipients received over 1 million pesos assistance last March.

Governor Diclas said the assistance may not be enough to compensate the pig raisers’ loss but he is hoping the assistance would be used by the recipients to restart their livestock business. The governor reminded them regarding biosecurity measures to avoid the spread of the ASF virus.

Dr. Tiongan, meantime, said they are continuing their efforts against the spread of the virus through the checkpoints and regular dissemination of reminders, reminding the public to be careful when buying pigs especially this Yuletide season. Sick pigs according to her should also be reported immediately to the local government.

Eight animal quarantine checkpoints being manned by personnel of the Provincial Veterinary Office in the province have been activated to help contain the spread of the ASF virus.
