TABUK CITY, Kalinga — Teachers are more than classroom educators—they are “modern-day heroes” who help shape the character, values and future of the next generation, according to Board Member Emilio T. Kitongan as Kalinga joined the National Teachers’ Day celebration Monday, October 5.

Kitongan, chair of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan Committee on Education, underscored that teachers’ work goes beyond imparting academic knowledge.

“Your dedication goes beyond the classroom walls. You shape not only intellect but also character, instilling in our youth the virtues of hard work, respect, and perseverance,” Kitongan said.

He described educators as planting “the seeds of wisdom” whose impact may only become evident years later as their students grow into responsible citizens and contribute to their communities.

“Through their tireless efforts, you plant the seeds of wisdom that will one day bear fruit for the progress of our communities and our beloved nation,” he added.

Kitongan pushes institutionalized teachers’ recognition

Kitongan’s message of appreciation is also reflected in his work as chair of the provincial committee overseeing education.

He authored Provincial Ordinance No. 2025-018, which seeks to institutionalize a Provincial Teachers’ Day in Kalinga and provide funds for its annual observance.

The measure originally set the celebration on the first Friday of October, replacing the schedule under Provincial Ordinance No. 2019-028, which designated the last Friday of September.

During the Provincial Government of Kalinga’s Kapehan meeting on October 5, however, the body proposed moving the celebration to the third Saturday of October to allow teachers and government employees to participate outside regular working days.

“Recognition should not end in one day”

For Kitongan, honoring teachers should go beyond an annual celebration.

He said their contribution continues throughout the school year as they guide learners, develop their character and prepare them for their future responsibilities.

“Ti amin nga manursuro, agyamanak unay,” Kitongan said, expressing his gratitude to all teachers for their dedication.

He emphasized that their role as modern-day heroes shaping the next generation remains a vital foundation for the future of Kalinga.

National Teachers’ Day is observed every October 5 under Republic Act No. 10743. This year’s national celebration also highlighted government efforts to improve teachers’ benefits, career opportunities and working conditions. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said more than 82,000 teachers and school heads had been promoted under the Expanded Career Progression System as of September.
