Tuguegarao City, Cagayan - Residents in Cagayan are urged by the Cagayan PHO to maintain cleanliness at their homes and at sites where mosquitoes mostly breed, as cases of dengue in the province are on the rise.

Based on the report of Cagayan Information Office, there are a total of 1,117 cases of dengue in the province from July 1 to July 6, 2025, recorded by the Provincial Health Office (PHO). The figure is almost 60% higher compared to the same period last year, with over 400 cases.

Of the total cases this year, the town of Baggao listed the highest with 107 cases, followed by Lasam with 77; Abulug, 75; Gonzaga, 71; Santa Teresita, 68; Camalaniugan, 67; Tuguegarao City, 62; Gattaran, 56; Alcala, 55; Lal-lo, 56; Apparri, 53; and Pamplona, 47.

In contrast to the rising trend, the towns of Calayan and Enrile reported the lowest cases, with 2 and 5, respectively.

As for the number of dengue-related deaths, there is no report yet from the agency as of this writing.

Contributing factors to the rise of dengue cases

The increase in dengue cases in Cagayan, based on reports, is due to unclean surroundings, especially in areas with stagnant water. Unattended containers, old tires, clogged canals, and uncollected garbage are some of the common nesting places for “Aedes Aegypti” mosquitoes, the primary carrier of the dengue virus.

The onset of the rainy season also contributed to the outbreak of the mosquito-borne disease. With heavy rains and humid conditions, mosquito populations grow rapidly.

Response of authorities to the health issue

With said health problem, the Cagayan PHO urged the public anew to strictly practice the 5S strategy against dengue, especially this rainy season when dengue transmission is heightened.

The 5S strategy includes searching and destroying mosquito breeding sites, self-protection measures, seeking early consultation for symptoms, supporting fogging/spraying in affected areas, and sustaining hydration. Doing so will prevent mosquitoes from multiplying; hence, reducing the risk of a dengue outbreak.

The PHO and other concerned agencies, the provincial government, city and municipal LGUs, and barangay LGUs are now leading cleanup drives and awareness campaign to ensure that communities remain safe and informed.

The Cagayan PHO reminds the public that if one shows symptoms of dengue, immediately seek medical attention to avoid worse complications or death. Common symptoms include fever, abdominal pain, and vomiting, among others.

Dengue is dangerous, as in every 1000 cases, there are four deaths being recorded by the country’s Department of Health. The agency recorded over 110,000 cases from January to May nationwide this year.
