Cordilleran cop killed in armed encounter in Caloocan City

Updated: Nov 25, 2022

Ifugao, Philippines – A young Igorot cop from Ifugao was killed in action during a 30-minute armed encounter with a former Philippine Merchant Marine Academy cadet on Sunday, November 13, 2022 in Barangay 177, Caloocan City.

The fallen hero was identified as Police Corporal Noel Ogano from Barangay Aduyungan, Mayoyao, Ifugao. He is a member of the Special Weapons And Tactics Philippines (SWAT) team assigned at Quezon City Police District.

According to the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO), Ogano and other police officers launched a follow-up operation against Martin Luther Nuñez, 42. It was said that Nuñez fired indiscriminately around 11:30 AM on said day in Barangay Pasok Putik, Quezon City.

The police tracked the suspect and negotiated with him at his residence at Maligaya Parkland in Barangay 177, Caloocan City. However, instead of giving in, Nuñez allegedly opened fire against the operatives.

This led to the retaliation of the authorities. The exchange of fire lasted for half an hour.

Unfortunately, Ogano was fatally shot during the encounter while Police Lieutenant Colonel Jerry Castillo, Deputy Commander of the District Mobile Force Battalion was injured.

The suspect was also neutralized after he was suffocated with the tear gas that the SWAT team had managed to throw at him.

Police Brigadier General Jonnel Estomo, NCRPO Director, extended his sympathy to the bereaved family, stating that Ogano left a name worth remembering.

"Hindi matatawaran ang katapangan na ipinakita ni PCpl Ogano na walang takot na humarap sa panganib upang tuparin ang kanyang tungkulin. Ito ay tunay na kapuri-puri at dapat lamang na ipagmalaki," he stressed.
