Baguio City, Philippines - The number of individuals infected by the dengue virus continues to rise in the Cordillera region, according to the DOH-CAR Data.

Health authorities said the DOH recorded 740 cases in the first two months of the year. Two of the number succumbed to the viral infection.

With said health risk, the Department of Interior and Local Government - CAR urged local leaders of the region to take preventive measures against the spread of dengue.

In her recent interview with the media, DILG–Cordillera Director Araceli San Jose said that all local chief executives should ‘mobilize their local health workers, volunteers, and communities to conduct clean up drives, search-and-destroy operations, and maintain proper drainage systems.’

“May mga namatay na sa dengue, hindi lamang sa Cordillera. Kaya ayaw natin na madagdagan pa ang mawawalang mga mahal sa buhay. Kaya sana makipagtulungan tayong lahat sa paglilinis ng kapaligiran, at sa mismong bahay at mga opisina natin,” she added.

The DILG has already released two circulars addressing the dengue problem. These are Memorandum Circular (MC) 2019-176, which provides guidelines for the conduct of the “Sabayang 4 o'clock Habit para Deng-Get Out,” and 2012-016, which promotes the “Aksyon Barangay Kontra Dengue” program.

For its part, DOH continues to educate the public on possible ways to eliminate the presence of mosquitoes in their homes. The agency is encouraging everyone to continue observing the 4 S's strategy against dengue – search and destroy, self-protection, seeking early consultation, and support fogging and spraying.
