Quezon City, Philippines – To commemorate the 500th anniversary of Lapu-lapu’s victory in Mactan against the Spaniards, the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) has directed the conduct of simultaneous flag raising activities in the country tomorrow, April 27, with the advocacy to emulate the heroic acts of the ancestors in the present fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.

“As we commemorate our ancestors' heroism, may we all find heroes within ourselves by being part of the solution in conquering yet another battle, this time against COVID-19,” DILG Secretary Eduardo Año said Sunday, April 25, 2021.

According to Año, like their heroic acts in the Battle of Mactan, Filipinos of today he said could also win the battle against the pandemic through ‘concerted efforts, cooperation, and discipline.’

"Just like the Victory at Mactan 500 years ago, we too can prevail and emerge triumphant against COVID-19. Let us hold on and we will eventually recover and rise stronger and be more resilient as a people against this pandemic,” the DILG secretary said.

In preparation for the simultaneous flag-raising, LGUs and government offices are directed to clean up historical landmarks, monuments, and plazas in preparation for said activity set at 8 in the morning of Tuesday, April 27.

Said directive is contained in DILG Memorandum Circular (MC) 2021-023.

“LGUs may also participate in the Quincentennial D-Day by offering flowers and wreaths at the pedestals of local and national heroes and other illustrious figures in their localities; hanging and displaying Philippine flags in public spaces until April 27, 2021; and illuminating in blue at 6 p.m. the government edifices, monuments, and other public spaces to celebrate the country's maritime civilization and our ancient maritime ancestors,” DILG report said.

LGUs are also encouraged by the department to publicize the conduct of the public events online and to share the Quincentennial features and postings regarding said event which are uploaded at the official social media pages of the National Quincentennial Committee (NQC) and Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) during or before the D-Day in their respective social media pages.

Meanwhile, Año reminded the strict observance of minimum public health standards to participating LGUs during the event.
