DOH targets to deworm 85% of Cordillera’s youth population this 2024

Baguio City, Philippines - The Department of Health-Cordillera has set a goal to deworm 85 percent, targeting around 521,000 individuals among the region's total youth population exceeding 610,000.

Focusing on the age group of 1-19 years old, this initiative marks a significant increase from the previous year's program, which benefited 106,691 individuals out of a target population of 613,884.

Despite challenges faced in the past, this year's campaign aims to overcome obstacles, particularly the reluctance of parents to administer deworming drugs to their children, fueled by vaccine-related fears during the pandemic.

Dianne Aurora Delizo, the focal person of the DOH-CAR program, in her interview with the government’s web-based newswire service, expressed optimism about achieving higher success rates this year, emphasizing proactive visits to schools and issuing waivers to parents for consent.

Highlighting the importance of deworming for children's health, Delizo explained that worms can adversely affect health and nutrition, leading to decreased physical and mental activity and, in severe cases, even death.

The DOH provides deworming pills such as albendazole or mebendazole, both readily available at DOH and government health facilities.

To further prevent the occurrence of intestinal worms, Delizo emphasized the significance of maintaining clean hands and toenails, consuming safe drinking water, and ensuring proper cooking practices. She underscored the adoption of the WaSH (water, sanitation, and hygiene) strategy as a crucial measure to prevent parasites from entering the body.

The focus of this comprehensive deworming campaign extends beyond the mere eradication of parasites to the broader goal of enhancing the overall health and well-being of the region's youth population.
