Baguio City, Philippines – The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) of Baguio is warning business owners against violating the Suggested Retail Price of basic necessities and prime commodities amidst fuel hike as a result of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

The Philippine Information Agency Cordillera, quoted DTI Baguio - Benguet Provincial Director Samuel Gallardo, having issued said reminder and stressing that DTI could take more serious actions against establishments that will increase prices without justifications.

"Kung nagtaas kayo tapos hindi ninyo ma-explain, hindi ninyo ma-justify kung bakit mataas masyado 'yung presyo nung basic necessity or prime commodity ninyo, we might take more serious action against the establishment," Gallardo said.

The DTI Director further explained that the increase should be reasonable such as increase in the price of retail products, guaranteeing the adjustment that was implemented. He added that there is a possibility of adjustment of SRP for the basic needs and commodities if fuel price hike continues.

Meantime, Gallardo advised the public to go to their office if they have complaints regarding the SRP or overpricing of commodities, and they conduct investigation.

To date, their office has not received any complaints regarding SRP violation.

Under the Price Act, those found guilty of manipulating the price of prime commodities or basic necessities will face 5 to 15 years in prison and a fine of P5,000.00 to P2 million. Violators of the price ceiling will be imprisoned for 1 to 10 years or fined P5,000.00 to P1 million.Bottom of Form
