DTI warns public against buying substandard Christmas lights

Baguio City, Philippines – As the Christmas season nears, the Department of Trade and Industry cautioned the public against buying substandard Christmas lights and decorations to avoid fire and other untoward incidents.

The agency advised consumers not to buy decors without Philippine Standards Certification Mark for locally-produced products, or import commodity clearance hologram and serialized stickers for imported products.

Also, consumers should scrutinize the plug pins and electrical wirings of the Christmas lights before buying as fake products may affect their health, environment, and properties.

“It’s worth to note nga ti Christmas lights ket maysa kadagiti mandatory products so dapat nga dagitoy nga mailaklako iti merkado ket pinmasa ti requirement ti BPS wennu Bureau of Product Standards so kadagiti merkado, maysa kadagiti dapat nga kitaen tayo when purchasing Christmas light ket dapat adda ti ICC sticker na dagitoy, in case these are imported or PS mark nu dagitoy ket locally manufactured,” stated Ralph Altiyen, the OIC of Consumer Protection Division of DTI Baguio-Benguet in his interview with PTV Cordillera.

Meanwhile, the department warned the vendors to avoid displaying uncertified products. If caught selling fake decors, they will be penalized and their products will be confiscated, as provided under the Consumer Act of the Philippines.

The department is set to check establishments on the third week of November.

The public is encouraged to report those selling substandard Christmas decorations for the proper action.
