Father asks help for his son who lost ability to speak and move after falling off a carabao

Fifteen-year-old Fidel Sukyan of San Francisco, Rizal, Kalinga fell from a carabao 7 years ago, since then his life changed, for he lost his childhood years of going to school and playing with other children his age.

Fidel, who has grown skinny, lost his ability to speak, walk, and stand, after the accident. His condition has yet to be diagnosed since his parents are surviving on a P200 a day pay, which is barely enough to feed the family.

Fidel has five other siblings, but only 2 of them are under his parents’ care since the 3 are already married while one is staying with a relative.

Fredie Sukyan, Fidel’s father, narrated that Fidel met an accident when he was in 3rd grade and was on his way home. He said that his son has a hobby of riding their neighbors’ carabaos on the way home, but unfortunately one day while riding, he fell with his head suspected of having hit a stone when he landed on the ground.

“Agus-uskwela idi ka grade 3 na. Iyawid na diay nuwang idi ngem haan mi a nuwang diay, nuwang iti karruba. Nu adda makita na a nuwang, apan makisakay isu diay,” Fredie recalled.

With the help of the community, Fidel was rushed to the Kalinga Provincial Hospital, where he was admitted for two weeks. Fredie said that his son was recommended for a CT scan, but they opted to bring him home instead since they cannot afford the procedure.

However, a month after the incident, Fidel can no longer walk or talk. He can only stand for a short period but with his parents’ support.

Without enough resources, Fidel has never had a checkup for almost 7 years now.

Immediate assistance for Fidel

Police Staff Sergeant Marieta Gayudan of the Rizal Municipal Police Station, who happened to meet Fidel and saw his condition, was emotionally moved over the sight of the 15-year-old who was just lying on a mat on the floor.

“Doon sa nakita ko ma’am naantig ang puso ko bilang ina. Sabi ko, ‘di ko kaya na mangyari sa mga anak ko ang ganito. So, habang kaya ko kunak, gagawa ako ng paraan na makabigay man lang. So, nag-isip ako kung ano ‘yung immediate need niya, then naisip ko bed,” she narrated.

With the help of her friends who pitched in to contribute to Marieta’s budget as well as the Rizal Municipal Police Station who supported the cause by shouldering the expenses for the labor, a steel bed with a foam and bed sheet was provided to Fidel on November 11.

Marieta said that the bed with foam will at least provide comfort to Fidel.

Fidel’s other needs

Barangay San Francisco Punong Barangay, Imelda Macasaddog, explained that Fidel’s parents cannot go out and work at the same time since one of them has to stay at home to look after Fidel. This is why they alternately go out to work in the fields.

Since their income is only enough for their daily needs, the family cannot afford to have Fidel checked up by a doctor and they cannot afford to provide his other needs such as a wheelchair, electric fan, and other supplements.

“Nu mabalbalin kuma ket tapnu agtugaw kuma met ket adda kuma wheelchair na, electric fan santu diay kasapulan na ta siyempre makita yu met iman iti bagbagi na,” she said, pertaining to Fidel’s skinny body.

To help Fidel, you may contact Punong Barangay Macasaddog through 09751744767 or you may coordinate with the Rizal Municipal Police Station through their hotline, 09985987823, and 09365534550.
