First ‘chichacorn’ producers in Kalinga get DTI livelihood grant

Tabuk City, Kalinga - The members of Cabaritan Association Rural Development to Empower Sustainability (CARDES) will be the first producers of ‘chichacorn’ as a livelihood in Kalinga under the Integrated Natural Resources & Environmental Management - Livelihood Enhancement Support 2 (INREP-LES2).


Chicharon lovers in Kalinga no longer need to import from other provinces once this is done.


The livelihood grant is expected to help the community to gain income from the ‘chichacorn’ products that shall be sold as a healthy snack, a pasalubong, can be used as tokens for visitors and can be exported to other places.

The project is a joint aid from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), and the implementation of the said livelihood will be monitored former.

According to DTI, the operation of the chicharon production will be in a temporary building in Cabaritan for now, since the proposed building by the agency is still under construction.

DTI Awarding Ceremony


The DTI awarded the members of CARDES worth P750, 000 of Shared Service Facilities (SSF) as equipment to be used for the chichacorn production and P50, 000 as seed capital with some packaging materials and stickers.


DTI-Kalinga Provincial Director Renie Ramos led the ceremony with other DTI officers and was also graced by Elizabeth Balais II from the Office of Governor Ferdinand Tubban, Henry Gupaal of the Mayor’s office, Denne Capuyan of PENRO-Kalinga, the members of CARDES and with the Guest speaker Alma Cortez of the Labs Mushroom House on August 24, 2021, at Cabaritan, Tabuk City, Kalinga.

Governor Ferdinand Tubban through Executive Assistant Elizabeth Balais congratulated the members and thanked the partnership of DENR and DTI for their dedication in the planning and implementation of the project.


Tubban also challenged the members in careful usage and maintenance of the equipment for the longer it operates, the longer they will benefit.


The proposed 48sqm one-storey processing center amounting to P1M was also discussed in the awarding ceremony.
