Tabuk City, Kalinga – Kalinga Governor Ferdinand Tubban acknowledged the contribution of the LGBTQIA + community in the province, underscoring some of the talents they possess working in the creative industry and the help they do to assist the needy.

In the Binibining Ikatlong Lahi 2021 Pageant in Kalinga held at the Capitol Gym on Sunday, December 19, 2021, the Governor commended the organizers by turning the competition into an activity for a cause.

“Binibining Ikatlong Lahi 2021 does not only showcase the talents or presentation of the third sex beauty, but it is also a way to show that the LGBTQIA plus community in Tabuk City has a heart of gold…A heart that feels other people’s pain and difficulties… a heart that moves to extend a helping hand.”

The pageant organized by the LGBT community did not only serve as an avenue for the members of the organization to showcase their talents, skills, and beauty but was also made to get funds to provide financial assistance to terminally ill members.

LGBT community participation in the economy

Tubban added that the LGBTQ community is one of the sectors that are turning the wheel of the economy, relating world development research findings showing a link between better legal rights given to the LGBTQ community and the increase in a country's GDP of 2,000 per capita.

“Nakita da a ti nasyon nga adda linteg a mangprotektar ti discrimination ken panakaabuso ti LGBTQ ket mas nangatngato ti Gross Domestic Product wennu total production ti maysa a nasyon. Some countries lose about 6% of their GDP because of their discriminatory laws,” he said.

For the Philippines, Tubban said that we are lucky as the country is tolerant and has accepted said sector, adding that since 2013, the Philippines has been said to be one of the most gay-friendly nations in the world and is the most gay-friendly country in Asia.

Likewise, the governor states that in recent years, the country has also started recognizing the contributions of the third sex and that social acceptance has increased with their participation in the workforce acknowledged.

Tubban's challenge to the LGBT community in Kalinga

With this, he then challenged the LGBTQIA+ community to serve as a good example of kindness, hard work, and generosity for yKalingas as during these trying times particularly this pandemic, people have various troubles besetting people from economic and financial inadequacy, studies, anxiety about the future, health problems, criminality, and other burdens and with these, people need other people who care.

“Agtitinnulong tayo ngarud tapno amin tayo ket maibangon tayo ti ili tayo laban iti pandemiya ken daduma a problema a masolbar laeng baben iti panagkakdwa,” he added.

Meantime, the governor assured that the provincial government will extend its help to the LGBTQIA plus community in the province for its members to reach their full potentials and be able to contribute to progress and development.
